Heart Health
A healthy cardiovascular system keeps our whole body and brain in good working order. Women’s hearts are relatively protected up until menopause, after which their risk profile begins to match men’s. Specific issues affecting women (such as pre-eclampsia) and strong family history can increase risk, but our health system still thinks of heart disease as a male condition and can miss important diagnoses, or the chance to intervene to prevent ill health.
Why?
Globally, cardiovascular disease is the biggest killer of women overall and kills more women than breast cancer. Current NHS care fails to assess female-specific risk factors and newer risk markers in detail.
